Here is my 2011 Christmas Letter:

There was a time this Fall, that I contemplated dispensing with my annual tradition of writing my Christmas letter. My wife in her eloquent manner suggested that would never ever happen. Once again, she is rightJ I started writing Christmas Letters in my teens following the example of my mother. So I guess I will continue on this tradition for at least another year in honor of her. On August 15 of this year, after a long illness, my Mom went home to be with the Lord. It has been a difficult fall coming to know that my mom isn’t at the other end of the phone or just down on Hickory Grove to go for a visit. I tried to explain to someone recently, since she’s been gone, life just seems so blah and dull. I manage to keep busy and keep going but it’s just hard to describe… Colored lights don’t seem as colorful anymore… it’s at this point that Isaac will remind me “That’s because mommy won’t let us get the colored lights, only the white ones”. Thank you sonJ

Another traumatic event occurred this year as I entered in another decade and hit the big 4-0. I’d love to say it didn’t bother me but I’d be lying. Now, I haven’t had a midlife crisis and decided to get a tattoo, nipple ring, or buy a Harley although nipple piercing garnered some attention. A trip with some of my closest friends to Florida to watch my beloved Habs and a few ball games was in order and helped lesson the blow of my pending aging decline.

Our Family continues to keep busy and move along to the next stages. Tanya has remained at home keeping our family on track and in order. We both continue to be very involved in our church with our home group, women’s ministries and various other committees. I also am active with Hockey Ministries and chapels with the Belleville Bulls along with a weekly radio show on www.cjlx.fm. Our Children continue to be a source of joy as well as premature aging!

Isaac turned 8 this year and continues to be active in soccer and hockey. I coach Isaacs’s hockey team and recently we participated in the Santa Claus parade. At the beginning of the route, he was given a bag of candy to give out along the way. Most kid’s bags were gone by the first corner but not Isaac. As we finished the route, he had managed to ration and save over half of the bag and proceeded to consume what was left. Other than having one of his permanent teeth knocked out this past summer by his adoring sister Eva, he is doing well.

Speaking of Eva, she is now 6 and in school full time. She is growing up and losing some of her “Diva-ish” qualities but she continues to makes us smile and laugh…. Although if she catches you laughing at her, she usually frowns and stomps off to her room. I recently took Eva to the Bulls game, just the 2 of us. We continue to billet one of the players, “Goose” and as the game started, she leaned over and said… “Which team does Goose play for?” I was a little puzzled as he’s lived with us for over a year and a half but responded and said “The Belleville Bulls Eva”. She nodded and went, “oh ok” I could sense it wasn’t sinking in and I said, “White shirts with the Bull on the Front Eva. “ This look of relief came over her face, OHHhhh. I believe she has inherited her love of hockey from her Aunt CarolJ

Faithy is 3 and was supposed to be our quiet one. Tanya and I recently had a much needed night out just the 2 of us. We reached our desired eatery and my posterior hadn’t even touched the seat at the table when our babysitter called to inform us that Faith had thought it would be cool to jam a bead up her nose… and it wouldn’t come out. So our desired evening of dinner and a movie was replaced with Timmy’s drive thru and a 3 hr stay in the ER. Faith looked at us as we waited in emerg and said, “I put a blue bead up there in me” Yes Faith, yes you did. As we waited, Faith eventually drifted off and when it was our turn to be seen, a clever maneuver of holding her nose and blowing through her mouth caused the object to projectile out of her snout. All this and she didn’t wake up. Oh Faith. No fear and busy busy busy. Never a dull moment in the Mackay House

We would joke about it and I must admit, as the years went by, the story got a little bigger and embellished a bit more. Not sure how high the snow banks really were or if in fact I was barefoot and walking up hill the whole way. But Mom would always laugh and say, “Are you ever going to let that go?” Mom was at home and made me walk alone. Well, now my mom once again is home….finally free from pain and suffering. I’m so happy that her trials are over but once again, it is I who must walk alone. It may sound weird but December 23 to me was something that I shared with my mom. And every year that was just between us. I am actually dreading December 23 this year just as much as Christmas. In thinking what I could do on that day, coming up on the 25th anniversary of my dreaded walk, It only seems fitting that I once again I should walk home. I will make the 9km walk from work to my house in honor and memory of my mom. I’m asking my friends and family to consider supporting $5 or $10 in my efforts so I can make a donation to the Salvation Army for their Christmas Dinner for those less fortunate, which is something my mom would have wanted..
Well, as you gather this holiday season with your family and friends, remember the reason we celebrate. Embrace your family and Embrace the savior, God’s gift to mankind, his Son. Merry Christmas from The Mackay’s.

Well I have yet to blog about my moms homegoing. One of the main reasons this blog existed was to keep her updated on our family activities and let her see a glimpse from her chair. Its so hard to imagine and know shes not here now. I find it very hard some days. I had thought of shutting it down but there are a few very special people in my life who say they check this out often, so Judy, i have decided to keep this going until you decide to join the facebook revolution.

It was Aug11, and i was getting ready to head out west to calgary for a friends wedding. I stopped at the house before i left to say goodbye to mom. She wasnt doing very well and i knew we as a family were going to have to make some tough decissions when i got back. As my plane landed on sunday afternoon, back in toronto, the text came through from my wife "Are you on the ground, there is something i need to tell you" Thats never usually good. Mom had been taken to the hospital. I rushed back and was able to get in to see her that night. As i came into the room at emerg, there was paul, carol, dad and I all together with mom. When i walked into the room and she spotted me, her eyes lit right up. I will forever remember that expression on her face. She knew me but no doubt was a little mixed up. She seemed figity and having a hard time getting her words out. The nurse came in and asked us to leave so she could run some tests. I left and said id be back the next day. 1:30am that night, i received a call from dad to come in to the hospital as she wasnt having a good night. When we all arrived, it was too late, she was already gone. (aug 15)

On my trip, i had prayed that if it was Gods will that he was going to take her, that he would do it quickly... and he did. I am so happy she is free of pain and although shes been sick for so long, and i knew this day was coming, id like to say ive been doing great and ok but the reality is, not a day goes by where i dont long to hear my moms voice or talk to her. Here we are 45 days later and its still pretty fresh and raw. Many days i go to pick up the phone on my way home only to realize, the person i am about to call is not here. It hits me harder some days. This week has been hard and im not sure why. My arrival time at home is usually a little later than normal to accomodate a quick trip to the grave site just to say hi and spend some time. Theres no stone there, just a few flowers weve left. I guess it really hits me when im low, feeling sick or really stressed. I could always call or go over to moms and sit at the end of her bed and she'd always be my biggest support and there was never any question whos side she was on. Of course my wife is that to me, but theres something that cant be replaced by the empathy received from your mom. Ive had some hard business issues to deal with this week and i really really miss being able to talk to her. I will go to the gravesite, sit and cry for a while and long to be at the end of her bed talking to her and hear her say im going to be ok. It hurts just as much today as it did on august 15, but God is giving me the strength to keep going, albeit with a big void. Tears still flow pretty easily but i try and mask it and hide it good. I will arrive home after a stop to see mom and my eyes will still be moist but home life will take over and i have to jump back into life of breaking up fights between the kids. Man i miss her today

Went over on Day 1 to my folks to drop off some berries and ended up staying for supper. Was a fun night

First day of our 2 week holiday was pretty ho hum but we decided to try and make it fun. Had lots of running around and errands to do so we decided to have a picnic on top of the 401 hill. Kids loved it. Then we decided to go berry picking to which isaac replied, "Why would we go do that when we can just buy them at Walmart" Ha fun times

Picked 3 baskets and took 1 to mom and dads for supper. Isaac was taking his job very seriously. Fun to watch

Barry & Jo-Ann came down for Fathers Day this year. We had such a busy day planned that day with swimming, birthday parties, anniversary parties, banquests etc... Was a fun day though. We went mini golfing together as a family and Faithy won herself a free game. Fun times

So I guess my Centennial Secondary School band roots are still there. I have always had a love of the standards and stage and big bands. Last year it was announced that the Glenn Miller Orchestra would be coming to belleville. Glenn Miller died in 1944 but his orchestra continues to record music and tour. We gave tickets to my in-laws for christmas and we had a nice night out, listening to some classic old tunes. Tanya tells me that I had a grin on my face the whole time. Ah well... i didn't live in the 30's and 40's but I do like the big band swing music from that era... classics like I've got a gal in Kalamazoo, Penssylvania 6-5000, Stardust, Moonlight Serendade and In the Mood. Good night

So i was rather pleased with the results of the election this week. Finally a majority. I was up in north bay for meetings while the election was on and on the way home, i stopped to help clean up some signs and put them on Gord Simmonds front lawn. Just trying to be a blessing. Had no idea he was voting coalition

Isaac has been playing 3 on 3 and the final night was this past thursday. As well the 1972 Paul Henderson Jersey was making the national tour. Some dude paid 1.3 million for this shirt and donated it back to tour around the country. Crazy amount of money.

Been a long journey for our friends the osmonds, 2 1/2 years of treatment for Delaney but on April 3 of this year, thanks to the Lord for his provision and restoration, Delaney completed her treatment. On May 1st, Steve & Lisa had a big party to celebrate with family and friends

There is a card show and memorabelia Expo every year in toronto and i've always wanted to go but never been able to. Over 400 exhibitors and overwhelming amounts of cards. Was able to go with some friends and take Isaac. Was a fun Father & Son Day
