Notwithstanding...

Does anyone else realize that this country has handed over all of its power to Beverly McLachlin, John Major, Michel Bastarache, William Binnie, Louie Lebel, Marie Deschamps, Morris Fish, Rosalie Abella, & Louise Charron. In the same sex debate, our prime minister promised that if there ever was a conflict between same sex marriage rights and religious rights (Churches being forced to perform same sex marriage), he would impose the notwithstanding clause to protect religious rights and freedoms. Last night in a feeble attempt to regain support, he pitched those rights out the window instead, embarking down a path that puts all power and supremecy for all laws and interpretation of laws in the hands of the 9 individuals above. In one foul swoop, he decided that the charter of rights and freedoms will dictate absolutely everything. All it takes is 5 of these individuals above to agree that the Bible goes against Canada's charter therefore there are no more protections and churches will be forced to preform same sex marriages and who knows what else. We have started down an extremely slippery slope. The power of our country should be balanced between the officials whom we've elected and the interpretation of the laws we've made. Giving power to 5 individuals and one document designed by Pierre Elliott Trudeau, is not only imbalanced, it's downright dangerous. ( Prime Minister Martin promised to protect the rights of churches in 2005 but his values now are different. He cannot be trusted.) 5 of the above supreme court justices were nominated by Jean Chretian, 2 by Paul Martin. The 2 that Paul Martin have nominated are quite left of center in their interpretation of the law.
